office42 assisted a family-owned daycare to expand and open Evergreen Preschool (infant - K) in Pasadena by transforming a commercial building with an original house at its center. The design strove to reveal the vaulted ceiling of the original house, carrying the shape to the exterior of the building with a gable-roofed, modern exterior room at the back deck to cover an outdoor eating area for the toddlers. Accommodating almost 40 children, the open floor plan has a bright green pod at its center that contains restrooms and sinks. There are larger and smaller areas broken up into classrooms and a separate infant care area with its own exterior access to the play yard. The back exterior is awash in blues and greens with a mix of playful stairs and ramps down to a play structure beneath cool, spiraling shade sails and rubber mulch enclosed in a continuous bike track.
